CHARLESTON — Keion Wright scored a game-winning touchdown with 1:04 remaining to lift No. 6 Capital to a 21-20 win over an inspired Princeton team at Laidley Field Friday night.
Playing without several key starters who were sidelined by injury — including Tevin Allen and Jerrell Powell — the Tigers took the battle to the Cougars (7-1) for most of the night.
Dalton Christian gave Princeton (3-4) a second-period lead on an 8-yard touchdown run, capping an 18-play, 84-yard drive.
Moments later, after the Tigers recovered a Capital fumble at the Cougar 19, Princeton quarterback Austin Harris scored on a one-yard keeper and the Tigers took a 14-0 lead to the locker room.
Capital didn’t get on the board until the third quarter when Jonathan Harold carried the ball the final 10 yards of a 43-yard running play after taking a lateral from Wright, to cut Princeton’s lead to 14-7.
After a bad snap aborted a 28-yard Princeton field-goal attempt, Capital took advantage of the miscue, scoring the tying touchdown with 9:11 remaining in the game on Wright’s five-yard scamper.
Princeton, resilient all night long, came back again. After recovering a fumble at the Cougars’ 35, the Tigers grabbed the lead on Harris’ second one-yard TD of the night. However the extra point attempt was wide left.
That left the door open for Capital’s game-deciding touchdown drive that ended with Wright’s run, followed by the extra point.
Wright, who played with a broken hand, entered as the Mountain State Athletic Conference’s leading rusher, and added to his total with 191 yards.
Justin Lester paced Princeton with 117 yards on 29 carries.
Princeton will host Riverside on Friday at Hunnicutt Stadium.
