Pulaski blasts six homers

PULASKI, Va. — The Pulaski Mariners’ bats provided plenty of Independence Day fireworks for a crowd of 2,489 as they hit six home runs en route to a 14-3 win over the Princeton Rays Friday afternoon at Calfee Park.

Kalian Sams hit two of those home runs. The first was a three-run shot in the third inning. The second was a solo effort in the fifth that was also his fifth homer of the season. Sams finished the game 2-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs.

Four other players homered for Pulaski. Jonathan Arias hit his first of the year in the second inning for two runs. Juan Fuentes also hit his first of the season, a solo shot in the fifth. Kris Sanchez recorded his third, a three-run blast in the sixth. And Jose Rivero hit his second, a solo homer in the eighth.

Sanchez had a perfect day at the dish, going 4-for-4 with three RBIs, a double and two runs. Fuentes went 2-for-5 with a double, three RBIs and three runs. Rivero also went 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI. Arias went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a run.

Deybis Benitez went 4-for-5 with a double and two runs. Mario Martinez added a 3-for-4 game with a double and a run scored.

Pulaski starter Nick Czyz improved his record to 2-1 for the season after going six innings and giving up an earned run on three hits with five strikeouts and two walks.

Princeton starter Albert Suarez was not as fortunate. He was chased after 2 2-3 innings in which he gave up six runs, three earned, on six hits, two home runs and a walk. Suarez took the loss and dropped to 0-2 for the year.

Jeremy Beckham led the Rays’ offense, going 2-for-4 with a double. Jeremy’s brother Tim went 1-for-3 with a run, but also struck out twice. Ramon Novas hit his second home run of the season for the Rays, a solo shot in the seventh inning.

Princeton will play the second of a three-game series at Pulaski tonight. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
