ATWELL — The Big Creek Lady Owls began their 2008 softball season Saturday by splitting two games with Mount Hope at home on the Atwell diamond.
The Mustangs took the first game 9-6 as T. Manning struck out 16 batters. Leading hitters for Big Creek were Stephanie Hutchinson (2-for-4) and Danielle Cabell (1-for-2, two runs scored).
In her first varsity pitching assignment, Big Creek junior Stephanie Keene struck out six and walked four. Mount Hope top hitters: C. Wiliams (3-for-3) and B. Acord (2-for-3, two runs).
The Lady Owls won 23-17 in the next game, tallying two or more runs in each inning in support of Cabell’s pitching. She struck out 15 and walked 15.
Big Creek hitters included Hutchinson (3-for-3, five runs), Amanda Gray (2-for-3, four runs), Ashley Shelton (2-for-3, a triple, three runs), Emily Morris (3-for-4), Santina Keene (1-for-1, one run) and Cabell (1-for-3, one run). For Mount Hope, Worrell was 2-for-4 and scored three runs.
Big Creek is scheduled to play at Mount View on Tuesday afternoon.
