Rams win first game under Hardin

WISE, Va. — Holly Hudson and Jessica Brokaw scored 14 points apiece, and the Bluefield College Lady Rams broke a 24 game-losing streak with a 69-66 Appalachian Athletic Conference win over Virginia-Wise on Saturday afternoon.

Bluefield (2-24, 1-15), which hadn’t won since its season-opener, outscored the Cavaliers 30-25 in the second half to pull out the win.

Jodi Smith added 12 points for the Rams, while Misty Neel added 10.

The win was a historic one as it was the first one under new head coach Steve Hardin.

Bluefield will host Montreat on Tuesday.



Concord 75, West Virginia State 61

INSTITUTE — Sierra Brown scored 17 points and pulled down nine rebounds, and Samm Nester tossed in 16 points, leading Concord to a WVIAC women’s basketball win over West Virginia State.

Concord (18-6, 14-4) also received 12 points from Becca Flanagan and 12 assists and eight boards from Jamie Cluesman. The Lady Lions, which host Central State on Monday, outscored the Yellow Jackets 45-29 in the second half.



Charleston 58, Bluefield State 52

BLUEFIELD — Veronica Carman scored 14 points and Jihan Williams added 13 points and 11 rebounds, leading Charleston past the Lady Blues.

Bluefield State (6-19, 4-14) was led by Adizatou Maiga with 14 points and eight rebounds, while Charise Watts added 12 points. Sasha Simmons tossed in 10 for the Lady Blues, which host West Virginia State on Monday.



Men

West Virginia State 84, Concord 68

INSTITUTE — Kenny Carter scored 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, leading the Yellow Jackets past the Mountain Lions.

Concord (12-13, 7-11), which has dropped two straight since winning six in a row, was paced by Dannie Parker with 28 points and 12 boards. Anthony Lansdowne added 13 points and Cordale Boyd added 10.

Concord travels Thursday to Charleston and will complete its regular season by hosting Bluefield State next Saturday.



Charleston 87, Bluefield State 77

BLUEFIELD — Robert Strickland scored 20 points and John White added 19 points and 11 boards in a Charleston win over the Blues.

Howard Coston led Bluefield State (2-23, 2-16) with 20 points and seven rebounds, while Shannon Thomas added 16 points and Logan Shortridge added 12 for the Blues, which hosts West Virginia State on Thursday.



Bluefield 92, Virginia-Wise 82

WISE, Va. — Coryon Ross scored 32 points and grabbed eight rebounds, leading the Rams to an AAC win over the Cavaliers.

Jimmy Witherspoon (13), Dontae Gholson (12) and James Chapman (11) also reached double figures for the Rams (21-6, 13-3), which hosts Montreat on Tuesday.

Witherspoon also had six assists and three steals.



Lions beat Pitt-Johnstown on diamond

ATHENS — Greyson Schram and Blake Klaiber collected two hits apiece, and Concord squeaked out 3-1 WVIAC baseball win over Pitt-Johnstown on Saturday afternoon at Anderson Field.

Concord dropped the opener 5-1 to finish the season-opening series with a 2-2 record. Concord will hosts West Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday at noon.

Donovan Huffer and Brooks Cullen combined on a seven-hitter for Concord in the win. Tim Merolillo hit a solo home run, his third long blast of the weekend.

The Mountain Lions were limited to five hits in the opener. Merolillo’s brother, Nick, drove in the lone run for Concord, while Tim Merolillo took the loss.
