Big first quarter helps Haysi surf Golden Wave

GRUNDY, Va. — The stage is set in the Black Diamond District with one week remaining in the regular season.

And, as it is with so many sports in the BDD, the last two teams standing are Haysi and Honaker.

Haysi stayed unbeaten in BDD play with a 76-49 thumping of Grundy Friday.

The Tigers (15-4) are now 8-0 in district play with two BDD games left to play, against Honaker which improved to 8-0 with a win Friday at Council. Honaker travels to Haysi on Tuesday and the two clubs meet in a makeup game Friday at Honaker.

“It seems like it always ends up Haysi and Honaker,” Haysi coach David Robinette said. “It’s taken me a while to realize that coming from Ervinton.

“Football, basketball, baseball. Our kids have worked hard for this opportunity to play (Honaker) with the district championship on the line.”

Haysi scored 37 points in the first quarter alone against a Grundy team that’s improved, but obviously continues to struggle defensively. Freshman Hunter Sutherland scored 14 of his 18 points in the opening period. Tyler Tipton added 11 as the Tigers shot 15 of 23 (65.2 percent) and had eight first-quarter assists as a team in building a 37-17 lead.

“The kids came out really focused,” Robintette added. “They’ve been focused for about seven weeks now. They moved the ball well and they shot the ball well.”

Tipton finished with a game-high 21 points to go with five assists. Peyton O’Quinn contributed 15 points, nine rebounds, eight assists and three steals.

Dylan Billiter led Grundy (2-15, 2-6) with 19 points.

The Golden Wave turned the ball over 20 times. Haysi’s biggest lead was 70-40 midway through the fourth quarter.



Girls game: Haysi 50, Grundy 41

Haysi proved it can play with everyone in the BDD and beat them after handing Grundy its first league loss in Friday’s opener.

The Lady Tigers led the Lady Wave from start to finish and withstood a Grundy rally in the second half behind the play of Erin Hyden, who scored 15 of her game-high 19 points after halftime. Most of them came inside from Hyden, who also excels from the perimeter. “She knows and we’ve talked about how she’s got to be an inside player sometimes,” Haysi coach Ronnie Compton said. “Tonight we needed her to go to the bucket and that created a few mismatch problems for Grundy.”

Hannah Mondrage scored 12 points and Sydney Counts added nine for Haysi ().

Loni Webb scored 13 of her 16 points in the second half and Morgan Hall added 13 points for Grundy, which fell behind 25-13 after shooting just 20 percent (5-of-25) from the field in the first half.

Grundy could get no closer than four points in the fourth quarter. Hyden, Counts and Maggie Edwards all hit free throws for Haysi in the final 37 seconds.
