ROCKY GAP, Va. —
Chase Hankins reached the 1,000-point scoring plateau and the Bland County Bears had things going their way in the Rocky Gap High School gym on Monday evening, until the Fort Chiswell Pioneers got hot at the foul line in the fourth quarter.
The visitors were 13 of 17 at the stripe in the final period, fueling a 28-point quarter and a 78-73 win over Bland County. The Bears went 3 for 8 at the free throw line in the period.
Hankins scored his 1,000th point on a three-pointer in the first quarter. The game was halted as the home crowd celebrated with the senior, his father and coach Rich Hankins, and his mother Patty.
Chase Hankins finished with three treys and 17 points. Asher Dillow led the Bears’ scoring column with 31 points, nailing five of Bland County’s nine three-point goals. Darryl Clark added 14 points.
Daniel Hamm and Coleman Thomas accounted for more than half of the scoring by the visiting Pioneers, ending with 24 and 22 points respectively.
Bland County led 41-34 at halftime and was ahead 56-50 going into fourth quarter.
The Bears (10-6, 2-3 MED) play at Narrows on Friday.
