SCOTT DEPOT —
Together in one gym, Christian school students from southern West Virginia made quite an impact during the second annual West Virginia Christian Education Association all-star night on Friday at Teays Valley Christian School.
Jamie Brown and Sami Goings of Mercer Christian Academy had 18 and four points respectively for the girls North Team, which beat the South 61-49 in team competition.
Josh Deskins of Ballard Christian School took home top honors in the dunk competition. Mercer Christian freshman Chandler Scott claimed the championship in the three-point shootout.
Pipestem Christian Academy boys coach Kevin Worley coached the South Team which beat the boys from the northern schools in their all-star team contest.
“It was just a great time for area Christian schools to get together once a year and get in there and compete,” said Mercer Christian girls coach Shelia Otey. “This was the best of the best in the Christian league.”
Brown’s 18 points were second only to the 21 points scored by Chelsea Burdette of Elk Valley.
Otey said, “It was exciting to see her (Brown) get to play with some advanced-level players, which is where she’s at.”
Goings also had two blocks. Otey said, “For a first-time player, she did a phenomenal job.”
Also from MCA, Samuel Stephens and Kenny Shrews-berry participated in the foul-shot and hot-shot competitions, respectively. London Taylor of the Lady Cavaliers was invited to participate in the team event but was unable to attend.
The all-star event was sponsored by Teays Valley Christian School for a second straight year. Otey said proceeds go to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
