TAZEWELL, Va. —
Western movie fans know about “Bad Day at Black Rock.”
Well this was Bad Day for the Black Diamond.
Not one of the district’s golfers qualified for state out of the Region D golf championships Wednesday at Tazewell County Country Club.
BDD team champion Honaker was fifth among the eight full teams on hand and just one stroke behind fourth-place Union.
It was close at the top, among the teams and the best individual golfers.
Wise County Central edged Virginia High by three strokes, 318-321, for the Region D team title. Lebanon (324) was another three strokes back in third.
Virginia High’s Ryan Hyatt won medalist honors with a 75, one stroke ahead of two Central golfers, Nick England and Cody Large, who led the Warriors with matching scores of 76.
Taylor Hall (Virginia High), Colby Addington (Union 77) and Michael Leonard (Lebanon) each shot a 77 while Lebanon’s Clay Cantrell was one shot off their pace with a 78.
Grundy’s Wayne Mutter, the BDD Player of the Year, shot a 37 over the front nine, but one bad hole, the 12th, did the Golden Wave senior in. He finished with an uncharacteristically high 86, one shot off the pace to earn a spot at the Group A tournament Oct. 8 and 9 at Lonesome Pine Country Club in Big Stone Gap.
“Every golfer has that one bad day or one bad hole once in a while,” Grundy coach Tom Holland said. “It’s a shame for Wayne it had to happen at such a big tournament on this big a stage. It’s just been such a privilege to coach Wayne. Of course, you don’t really have to coach him.
“He’s been with us the whole six years I’ve coached here, going back to when he was in the seventh grade and we called him our manager. Wayne is a unique individual and he’s just a great kid to be around. Whether he plays golf or kicks a football when he goes to college I expect him to do exceptionally well.”
Tyler Hale’s 89 paced Honaker.
The top two teams and the top six individuals from other teams advance to the Group A state tournament.
The Region D tourney was originally scheduled for Monday, nut was pushed back two days by rain.
