BIRCHLEAF. Va. — One girls team and one boys team remain unbeaten in Black Diamond District play.
Haysi and Twin Valley split the honors Thursday at Sandlick Elementary School.
The Haysi boys and Twin Valley girls each took sole possession of first place in their respective standings with victories Thursday night.
The Tigers stopped the Panthers, 59-44, in the boys contest. In the girls game, the Lady Panthers handed Haysi a 62-52, defeat.
In the boys game Byron Bowman scored a game-high 25 points and Chris Fleming added a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds to go with four assists.
Fleming also had two steals and two blocks, and played a part in a Haysi zone defense that was the difference in the game. The Tigers (8-7, 3-0) surrounded Twin Valley’s leading scorer, Josh Smith, with two and three defenders and held the senior post to 13 points, just four in the first half.
“Smith’s tough,” Fleming said. “We stayed in our spots and played defense. We had a good game plan and we executed it.”
Daniel Hobbs and Brandon Viers each scored 12 points for the Panthers (8-7, 2-2), but it wasn’t nearly enough. Smith got just four shots in the second half, while his teammates were a combined 5-of-29 from the floor after the break.
Bowman carried Haysi offensively in the first quarter, scoring 11 points, and added eight points in the fourth period. Fleming scored 12 points in the second quarter, as the Tigers took a 29-23 lead.
Jeremy Yates and Dakota Stanley combined for just eight points, but they hit back-to-back three-pointers to double Haysi’s third-quarter lead to 37-25. Twin Valley got no closer than six points again the rest of the way, at 50-44, after a free throw by Smith with 4:03 remaining.
