EAST RIVER —
The Bluefield Beavers scored early and often on Monday to defeat the Independence Patriots 11-1 to begin sectional soccer play at the East River Soccer Complex.
Bluefield (13-5-2) scored 39 seconds into the game as J.T. Roberts sent a cross from the right side to Justin Phillips for the initial goal. The Beavers scored six more times before the half, while keeping the Patriots off the scoreboard.
In the second half, Bluefield played its bench, and scored four additional goals.
Phillips and Jose Torain each had four goals to pace the Beavers. Bamba Diouff, Nick Delida and Justin Freund added one goal each. Roberts had a hat trick on the assist sheet with three, while Ryan Stamper added an assist in the victory.
Independence’s lone goal came in the 75th minute.
Bluefield awaits the winner of today’s PikeView-Mingo Central game for the sectional championship, to be played Thursday night at 7 p.m. at East River.
That match will be preceded by the girls sectional championship at 5 p.m.
The Beavers are ranked 11th and the PikeView Panthers are 10th in the Class AA-A state rankings released on Monday.
