Rays survive a wild night

By BOB REDD

PRINCETON — Ryan Wiegand raced home on a wild pitch in the 12th inning to give the Princeton Rays a 4-3 win over the Burlington Royals, Thursday night at Hunnicutt Field.

Geno Glynn, an infielder, got the win for the Rays, working the 12th inning.

Omar Bencomo struck out the game's first batter. Then a double by Yowill Espinal, a single by Guelin Beltre and a double by Ryan Wood gave Burlington a 2-0 lead.

Princeton got on the board in its half of the first. Brian Bryles drew a leadoff walk and stole second. He took third on a ground out and scored when Dan Rhault grounded out to second. After Weigand walked, Julio Cedenogot the Rays first hit off Carlos Fortuna, a single up the middle to put runners on first and second.

The Rays drew even in the fourth. Jason Patton singled to right, stole second and crossed the plate on Tomas Francisco's single down the third base line.

For Princeton, Bencomo took control of the game. Burlington got a hit with one out in the second, then the righty retired seven in a row before Fernando Cruz singled to lead off the fifth.

The Rays took the lead in the bottom of the fifth off new pitcher Gary Cuevas.

Burlington retied the contest at three in the sixth and that is where it stood until the bottom of the 12th.

Weigand led off the frame with a double to center. Cedeno singled to left and Jason Patton drew an intentional walk.

Onassis Sirrett then uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Weigand to score the game-winning run.

Glynn got the win, Sirrett suffered the loss.
