Prep roundup: Richlands sweeps past Haysi

RICHLANDS, Va. — It seems as if there is no stopping Devon Johnson.

The Richlands senior scored 33 points and cleaned up the glass for 20 rebounds as the Blue Tornado held on for 63-57 victory over Haysi Friday night.

Richlands led 17-8 after one, but allowed the Tigers to claw their way back in the second as the Blues took a 25-22 lead into the locker.

Ben Brown paced Johnson’s effort with 17 points.

Tyler Tipton’s 25 points led Haysi.

Richlands, who finished second in the Southwest District, close out their regular season at Twin Valley today weather permitting.

SHADY SPRING — David Keen scored 23 points and Will Webster added 21 points to lead the Panthers back to a .500 record.

Corey Peyton added 10 points for PikeView.

Chase Connor led the Tigers with 20 points while Ryan Lucas added 11 points.

Jacob Buckland added 8 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for Shady Spring.

Mercer Christian 62, New Life Christian Academy 51

SUMMERSVILLE — James Beckner and Jonathan Easter each scored 24 points for the Cavaliers. Mercer Christian made nine three-pointers, six by Easter and three by Beckner.

Mercer Christian used a big second quarter to take a 35-28 lead and added to their advantage in the third period, avenging a double-overtime loss to New Life in Princeton — beating an opponent that had defeated them for the second night in a row.

The Cavaliers (6-13) play their final home game Monday night against South Charleston Christian Academy.

LINDSIDE — Summers County made 10 three-point goals Friday night, but could not hold the lead through the second half.

Zach Hatfield led the Mavericks with 22 points and Micah Deskins chipped in 15.

The Bobcats’ Isaiah Brown scored all 15 of his points on five treys; Ashton Garten added 11 and Josh Brown had 10.

James Monroe (12-8) plays home against Greenbrier West on Tuesday.

CLEAR FORK — Four Warriors reached double-figure scoring Friday, led by Luke Campbell’s 19 points. Taylor Smith had 14 and Austin Canada and and Marcus Schofield each scored 10. Corey Bowles led Westside with 15 points.

Wyoming East had a 16-point halftime lead. Wyoming East was 15 for 16 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter to offset a 12-2 run by the Renegades (12-7).

The Warriors (12-4) are scheduled to host Oak Hill tonight.

RICHLANDS, Va.  — The Lady Blues opened up a 22-10 lead over Haysi in the first quarter and sailed to their 13th win of the season.

Brittany Allen had 28 points for Richlands (13-8), which made seven three-point goals and limited Haysi to nine or fewer points in each quarter after halftime.

Brittany Roark led the Tigers’ scoring with 16 points.

Richlands finishes the regular season this evening at Twin Valley. The Lady Blues play Tuesday at home in the first round of district tournament.

CLINTWOOD, Va. — Savannah Charles scored 19 points and Morgan Hall added 18 points as Grundy used an early lead to hold off Clintwood.

Hall added 11 rebounds for the Wave who were without starter Loni Webb. Hannah Stiltner added 12 points and four steals.

Katlyn Phillips led Clintwood with 13 and Sam Stanley had 11.
