CLINCHCO, Va. —
For the first time in school history, Honaker has won the Black Diamond District regular season and tournament title. Honaker defeated Haysi 68-60 to win their 13th straight game.
“It’s just awesome to make history,” said Tiger senior post Payton Ball. “Coming into the season our expectations were high. We have just played extremely well as a team, this is the best team ball we’ve played.”
During the Honaker run, it has been someone different stepping up each night. Against Haysi in the finals, it was Casey Dye. The sophomore finished with a game-high 23 points, including a 6-of-7 effort from the free throw line.
“Casey really stepped up,” Ball said. “He made a statement tonight. They were tough inside game Tanner (Robinette) and me and Casey just went at it.
“If you go man-to-man against us, it’s pick your poison. If you play a zone, we have four or five guys that can hit from the perimeter.”
Point guard Ty Hall had a double-double with 14 points, 10 assists and six rebounds. Ball was close finishing with 14 points and nine rebounds. Robinette only had two points but grabbed five rebounds and blocked five shots in limited playing time due to foul trouble.
Honaker held a 17-14 lead after the first eight minutes and Haysi was never able to get the lead back. Honaker couldn’t put Haysi away but the Dickenson County Tigers could never get over the hump.
Tyler Tipton led Haysi with 13 points. Drake Howell had 11 and Hunter Sutherland 10.
“My kids battled like they always do,” said Haysi coach David Robinette. “I was very pleased with our effort. Honaker is just five or six points better than us.
“Honaker is just physically strong. We try to our run people, but they are quick like us and a little stronger.”
Both teams will advance to the Region D tournament next week.

Council 57, Hurley 43
In the boy’s consolation contest, Hurley kept it close for eight minutes then Council pulled away for a 57-43 win.
“We started going inside more in the second quarter, that’s something we’ve been working on,” Council coach Patrick wade said. “It’s the third time we’ve played Hurley so we put in a few new things in practice.”
The Cobras exploded for 20 points in the second quarter to take a 29-20 lead at intermission. They continued to roll in the second half, Hurley was unable to stop the surge.
Cameron Presley (15 points), Josh Viers (14) and Justin Mathis (11) led the Council offense.
Nick Gibson (10) was the only player in double figures for Hurley.
