Prep roundup: Graham claims SWD golf crown

TAZEWELL, Va. — Ben Taylor’s 74 led Graham to the Southwest District regular season golf championship on Wednesday at Tazewell County Country Club.

Graham’s four-person score of 310 was five strokes better than second place Richlands. Marion, which had been leading the SWD golf race, finished third with a 319.

Morgan Brewster added a 77 for Graham, while Zach Proffitt had a 79, and Alex Riffe fired an 80.

Richlands’s Brandon White and Carroll County’s Kris Goad tied for medalist honors with a 73. The Cavaliers finished a distant fourth, tied with Abingdon with a 345.

The Blue Tornado also received production from Jimmy Bower (77), Barrett Cunningham (82), and Andy Guerriero (83).

Grundy, which was sixth with a 361, was paced by L.C. Mutter with a 74.

Tazewell was seventh, shooting a 377.



Tigers have rough day on the links

PRINCETON — The Princeton Senior High School golf team had what coach Pat Haye termed “an off day” on Wednesday and finished eighth out 13 schools in the MSAC Conference Tournament at Big Bend Golf Course in Tornado, near South Charleston.

Jack Hickman’s 79 was the top score for Princeton (42-12), which recorded a 329 team total. JJ McPherson had an 81, Alex Quick carded an 84, and Sean Parker shot an 85.

George Washington High School shot a 298 to win the tourey. Medalist for the day was Parkersburg’s Allen Cooke, who shot a 70.

Princeton will host Montcalm, PikeView and Shady Spring this afternoon at the Princeton Elks.

LINDSIDE — Courtney Wallace and Zach Hampton each recorded three goals apiece, also known as hat tricks, to lead the Beavers past the Mavericks.

Devon Williams, Kyle Harris and Nick Delida each added a goal for Bluefield.

“It was a complete team effort by our guys,” Bluefield coach Robb Williams wrote in an e-mail. “ We have continued to work hard and improve throughout the year and this is the result of that work.”

Hampton and William each had two assists while Wallace, Ryan Cardwell and Justin Freund added one assist each.

The Beavers travel to Shady Spring next Thursday.

LINDSIDE — Allison Shaw scored Bluefield’s only goal off an assist from  Brandie Blackwell in the Beavers’ win over the Mavericks.

Ebony Allison had seven saves to earn the shutout in goals.

Bluefield (3-2-1) will host Herbert Hoover tonight at the East River Soccer Complex. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.

Montcalm Splits Two

SMITHERS — Jill Bailey and Kelli O’Donnell combined for 29 aces as Montcalm defeated Valley (Fayette) 23-25, 25-11, 25-19.

Maranda Crane had nine digs and Erin Jones had five kills.

Montcalm dropped a second game to Oak Hill 20-25, 18-25. O’Donnell had 10 aces and Kristi Sexton had three kills.

Montcalm (1-2) travels to Westside today for a tri-match against Westside and Burch at 6 p.m

Open Season

PARKERSBURG — Nick Dent’s two-day score of 145 led Bluefield State to a fifth place finish at the Ohio Valley University Invitational at Woodridge Plantation.

The Big Blues two-day total of 599 was 24 strokes back of the winner, Clarion University.

Dent placed eighth and finished eight strokes behind winner, Connor Lefever of West Chester, Pa.,

Bluefield State also received a two-day 148 from Brandon Watkins, followed by Chandler Beavers (152), Josh Ginger (154) and Ryan Gillespie (160).

Bluefield State will play in the Montreat Invitational this weekend in Asheville, N.C.

Concord falls

to Davis & Elkins

ATHENS — The Concord women’s soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to Davis & Elkins on Wednesday, dropping to 0-3 on the season.

The Concord men’s team played to a scoreless tie against the Senators, dropping to 0-2-1 on the campaign.

Concord will host a doubleheader on Saturday against Seton Hill, with the Lady Lions slated to begin at noon.
