EAST RIVER —
The Bluefield Beavers boys soccer team celebrated Senior Night with a 9-0 win over the Independence Patriots, Tuesday evening at the East River Soccer Complex.
The Beavers entered the contest as the 9th-ranked team in the state and the co-ed team from Raleigh County was outmatched from the opening kick.
In the first minute of the game a Patriots defender got turned around and kicked the ball into his own goal to give Bluefield a 1-0 lead. Then within the next 10 minutes of play Bluefield got goals from Chavez Burris, Jose Tarin, Justin Phillips and J.T. Roberts to build a 5-0 lead. The onslaught continued as Tarin, Bamba Oioff and Chavez added goals before half to give the Beavers an 8-0 lead at the intermission.
At halftime senior members of the Bluefield boys and girls soccer teams were honored with their parents, as each was introduced and escorted to midfield.
Seniors on the girls team were Brandi Blackwell, Chelsea Lester, Rachel Looney, Allison Shaw and Cassie Stanton.
The girls team did not play on Tuesday.
Seniors on the boys team honored were Jonathan Brown, Chavez Burress, Kiontae Carrington, Brandon Eldridge, Justin Freund, Jalen Masterson, Michael Musick, Justin Phillips, J.T. Roberts, Matthew Sabo and Nick Delida.
After the ceremony second half play resumed and Beavers coach Robb Williams turned to his non-starters and underclassmen. Bluefield scored once in the final 40 minutes, a breakaway by Oioff.
“We played our starters for just a half, Williams said. “We get no joy out of running the score up on any team.
“We looked very good coming out. We haven’t been able to practice in about a week-and-a-half, that’s been tough. I wanted to make sure I got our starters some playing time and they did a solid job passing the ball and we scored early and often and I was able to keep them in for a half, then I put in the other guys.”
Bluefield improved to 11-5-2 on the season and plays against the King’s Warriors on Thursday. The King’s Warriors are a team comprised of home schooled students in the area, based out of Hinton.
