JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. —
Six errors proved costly as the Bluefield Blue Jays dropped a 7-5 Appalachian League decision to Johnson City on Thursday night at Howard Johnson Field.
Johnson City ( 21-18) took a 5-1 lead into the seventh when the Blue Jays rallied for three runs, but the Cardinals added two more to pull away.
Ildemaro Vargas had two hits, including a home run, and scored three runs to lead the Cardinals. Bruce Caldwell had a double, single and two runs scored, while Adam Ehrilch added a pair of singles.
Silifredo Garcia worked 6 1/3 innings to pick up the win for the Cardinals, while Virginia Tech product Ronald Shaban collected his 10th save.
Bluefield (18-21) had six errors, including two apiece by third baseman Matt Dean and catcher Santiago Nessy. Only two of the seven runs scored by Johnson City were earned.
Christian Lopes, who also had an error, had two doubles and scored two runs. Nessy added three hits and drove in four runs, while Seth Conner added two hits in the loss.
Deivy Estrada was saddled with the loss.
Bluefield will remain in Johnson City for a 7:05 contest tonight. The Blue Jays will host the Bristol White Sox in a three-game series starting on Saturday.
•Pulaski rallied for two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning against Princeton closer Zach Butler to force extra innings on Thursday night at Calfee Park.
No one had scored since, with the score still tied at 8-8 in the 12th inning at press-time.
