WINONA LAKE, Ind. — WINONA LAKE, Ind. -- It's been four years since Bluefield has beaten rival King College, but they were able to pull off the win in a 64-61 thriller at the NCCAA tournament to finish in fifth place.
The two teams ironically also met in the NCCAA Regional Tournament on Mar. 3 where King won 72-70. Bluefield, seeking payback, got their revenge on Saturday.
The Lady Rams (24-10) controlled the entire game until the final minutes of regulation. A key free throw from Bluefield's senior guard Holly Hudson sealed the deal and gave Bluefield the three point victory.
It was an even match-up at the start of the game. The Lady Tornado (18-13) led 13-12 thanks to nine points from Allison Bosse. Bosse finished with a game-high 21 points on 8-of-13 shooting.
Bluefield, however, went on a 14-2 run to build a double-figures lead. King got within five points with six minutes to play, but Bluefield went on a 10-0 run to build a 15-point advantage.
At the half, King trailed 38-28 after finishing the half on a 7-2 run.
Turnovers and three pointers were key in the first half for Bluefield. They forced 10 turnovers and only had five of their own and nailed 5-of-11 from beyond the arc compared to only one from King College.
The Lady Rams maintained their lead in the second half and led the entire period. The closest King got was with 38 seconds left in the game when Bosse sunk two free throws to get her team within two points (63-61). King was able to make a comeback at the end of the game because of their full court press.
Bluefield's Megan Randall was the only scorer in double-figures for the Lady Rams. She tallied 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting, and Kia Gilliard had seven points and five assists. Bluefield had 10 players score in the game.
Along with Bosse, Ashley Deans also played well for King. She had 17 points on 7-of-14 shooting and grabbed six boards.
