PINEHURST, N.C. — Virginia Tech shot a three-round total of 12-over-par 876 and won the Pinehurst Intercollegiate by Gatorade at the 7,009-yard, par 72 Centennial Pinehurst Number 8 Course at the Pinehurst Resort on Sunday afternoon.
Garland Green of Tazewell, Va., a junior at Virginia Tech, turned in a 226 for the Hokies.
The Hokies shot a final-round six-over-par 294 and overcame a two-stroke lead by Penn State entering the final round. The Hokies defeated runner-up Old Dominion by four strokes.
The victory was the Hokies’ first tournament title since October of 2007, when they won back-to-back events at The Ridges and Landfall.
Freshman Mikey Moyers finished with a three-day total of 2-under-par 214 and finished in second place, one stroke behind Robert Hoadley of UNC Greensboro. It was Moyers’ best-ever finish at Virginia Tech.
Sophomore Blake Redmond finished tied for 18th at six-over-par 222 and junior Aaron Eckstein tied for 21st at 223. Junior Marshall Bailey tied for 29th at 225.
Freshman Jacob Everts played the event as an individual and finished tied for 51st at 229.
The Hokies compete in the Furman Intercollegiate in Greenville, S.C. in a three-day event beginning on Friday.
