Summers County gets 38 steals in win over Frankfort

CHARLESTON — Another day for the record books.

Another day at the office for Summers County.

The three-time defending Class AA champion Bobcats cracked three records and threatened another Wednesday as they downed Frankfort 87-28 in the quarterfinals of the girls state basketball tournament.

“The kids play great defense,” coach Wayne Ryan said after his team forced the Falcons into 46 turnovers, six more than Lincoln committed against the Bobcats in last year’s championship game.

Summers (26-0) had 38 steals, breaking its old mark of 24 against Mullens in 1994.

Finally, the 59-point margin of victory topped by five University’s 79-25 win over Vinson in 1979.

Ryan made it clear he was not trying to run up the score on Frankfort, which led 2-0 and did not score again in the first quarter.

“As far as the margin of victory, we’re not trying to show anybody up,” he said. “We pressed for one half only, and the most minutes anyone played was 20.”

All 14 Summers players got into the game and 12 scored at least a point.

“We have to get our work in, but we were respectful at the same time,” Ryan said.

The Bobcats nearly broke their own steals record in the first half alone, getting 23 as they moved ahead 49-14.

Four-year starter at point guard Ashley Brown had six while juniors Hallie and Hanna Gunnoe had five apiece in the opening half.

“To be able to trap full-court — that’s some athletic players,” Frankfort coach Erin McKenzie said.

“We’ve never seen something like that.”

Summers had 18 first-half points in transition and 34 for the game.

While the Bobcats uncharacteristically missed a lot of layups, they still scored 58 points in the paint. Twenty-two were on putbacks.

“We missed a lot of easy open shots, but we were there to back each other up,” Hallie Gunnoe said.

Summers took 83 shots in the game, three less than its record total against Sherman in 1988.

Gunnoe, who finished second to North Marion’s Mariah Byard for state player of the year honors, led all scorers with 19 points.

Leslie Mack, who hit back-to-back 3-pointers to key Summers’ 25-point first-quarter explosion, scored 16 points.

Hanna Gunnoe was the top rebounder for Summers with eight and also had 16 points.

Brown had seven points, seven assists and 10 steals. Her sister Candace came off the bench for 10 points and seven steals.

Frankfort, the Cinderella team in the AA field with a 7-13 record, lost any chances of an upset early when point guard Savannah Hose injured her knee.

Hose, who had given the Falcons its early 2-0 lead, tried to play through the pain but managed just 10 minutes.

She finished with five points.

“She’s our floor general,” McKenzie said. “You take the point guard out of the game and it’s hard.”

Madison Shambaugh led Frankfort with six points and eight rebounds.

Summers has now won 66 consecutive games dating back to 2008.

“What amazes me about the streak is the consistency these young ladies bring,” Ryan said. “They not only show up and play every night, but they show up and play every day in practice.”

The Bobcats will play Ravenswood in a semifinal game at 1 p.m. Friday at the Charleston Civic Center.
