Turnovers costly for Grundy in Appomattox

APPOMATTOX, Va. — There was no sign of surrender from Grundy on it first foray into historic Appomattox.

Unfortunately for Grundy, thanks to four turnovers and the speed of Appomattox county, there was no way to avoid defeat.

Josh Wilson scored four touchdowns to lead Appomattox County to a 40-7 victory over Grundy in the opening round of the Group A, Division 2, Western Section Playoffs Friday night.

All four Grundy turnovers came in the first half. Those turnovers and the Raiders speed were too much for the Golden Wave to overcome.

Appomattox County scored  on the first four possessions to build a 27-0 halftime lead.

“The early turnovers hurt us, especially against a good team like Appomattox,” Grundy coach Jeremy Ward said. “But the kids played hard all the way through and we’re proud of them for that.”

The Raiders (10-1) spread the field and used just a few basic plays, including the option, to garner 534 yards on the ground.

Wilson ran for 137 yards on 15 attempts, while Jamie Mosley added 117 yards on 5 carries, all on reverses.

“Wilson is a tough kid,” Ward added. “We knew he was quick, but we didn’t realize how hard he is to tackle.”

Grundy had two possessions and inside the Appomattox County 10-yard line before the Golden Wave finally finished the drive.

Ben Rife tossed a 15 yard td pass to Dylan Billiter to cap a 14 play, 80-yard drive with 6:40 remaining.

“We had some chances to score and you have to take advantages of those kinds of opportunities in a game like this,” Ward said.

Grundy threw two interceptions, lost one fumble, and lost another fumble on a kick return.

Grundy finished the season 6-5 overall in Ward’s first year as head coach.
