University of Charleston sweeps Bluefield State on senior night

BLUEFIELD — Senior Night at Bluefield State College saw the University of Charleston men and women both claim victories. Big Blues seniors David Noel, Stephen Neal, Raylon Almon, Sean Weatherspoon and Logan Shortridge, along with the Lady Blues’ Angelica Kimbrough were honored prior to the start of the men’s game.

UC topped the Big Blues 83-71 in a tightly contested game and the visitors downed the Lady Blues 87-53.

The Charleston men opened the game on an 8-0 run, but on Senior Night, seniors helped the Big Blues get into the game. David Noel’s lay-up at the 12 minute mark mad it a four point game and when Stephen Neal dropped in two free throws it was a three point game.

Sean Weatherspoon’s reverse layup with 6:35 to go in the half made it a one point game, 21-20 in favor of Charleston. Following a UC timeout, the Golden Eagles appeared to find their groove and closed the half on a 15-6 spurt and took a 35-26 lead into the intermission.

Things tightened up in the second half as State on several occasions pulled to within four points. It was not until the game’s final three minutes that the Golden Eagles opened a double-digit lead.

Bahaadar Russell led Charleston with a game-high 27 points, including seven three point goals. Weatherspoon paced BSC with 21 and Rico Thompson added nine. Weatherspoon had a team-high 10 rebounds.

Woes continued for the Lady Blues. Charleston raced out to a 12-0 lead and Bluefield State’s first score came with 14:51 remaining in the first half on Amber Fitzgerald’s basket in the paint.

The visitors built a 21-4 lead before the Lady Blues caught a bit of a spark and closed to within nine points, 29-20 on Angelica Kimbrough’s floater in the lane with 5:55 before halftime.

That was as close as BSC would get as UC closed the half on a 15-6 run to lead 44-26 at halftime.

The second half was all Charleston as they built a 30-plus point lead en route to the 87-53 win. Kelly Pawlowski led State with 14 points while Fitzgerald and Laken Coburn added 11 each.

Kaitlyn Arick led UC and all scorers with 21. Tarenna Dixon and Lindsey Kentner each scored 16.
