PRINCETON —
Leadoff homers were contagious for the Princeton Rays on Monday evening.
Brandon Martin and Omar Narvaez started out the first and second innings with shots to left and right field, respectively, and the P-Rays never trailed in a 6-1 victory over the Danville Braves to open a three-game set at Hunnicutt Field.
Danville’s Ronald Luna scored his team’s only run on Princeton’s only error in the third, cutting the Rays’ lead to 2-1, but Princeton (31-29) added runs in the following two frames and capped it off with a two-run eighth inning.
Alex Keudell pitched the first six innings for Princeton, surrendering just two hits and striking out five Braves (33-23). Williams Perez, the Danville starter, was touched for seven hits in five innings and absorbed the loss.
Zach Butler handled the pitching in the ninth for Princeton. He walked a batter and gave up two singles to load the bases, but induced a pop-out by Levi Hyams to end the game.
Narvaez, who was 3 for 4 for the night, hit his first Appalachian League homer. Martin’s was his 10th of the season.
Princeton continues its series with Danville through Wednesday evening, then hosts the Bristol White Sox to wrap up the P-Rays’ home schedule on Thursday through Saturday.
