BLUEFIELD, Va. —
The Graham G-Girls survived a strong physical attack from the Fort Chiswell Lady Pioneers and snagged a 55-42 Mountain Empire District win, Wednesday night.
Whistles were the norm for the night as the officials stopped play 45 times for fouls, 24 called on the G-Girls, 21 on Fort Chiswell.
Graham took the early lead and did not relinquish it, leading 11-6 after the first quarter. It stood at 25-19 at halftime and after a third quarter that lasted nearly half an hour Graham led 37-29 going to the final eight minutes of action.
“It was a very physical game,” said GHS head coach Tracy Raban. “I was afraid it was going to get a little bit out of control, but we maintained our composure, stepped it up when we had to. I’m very proud of our girls the way we handled the pressure. It’s a very big game for us and I’m pleased with the way we played.”
Emaleigh Gallinger topped the Graham scoring column with 12 points, closely followed by Ashley Rasnake with 11.
Sarah Whisman led Fort Chiswell with a game-high 17,11 of those points coming from the free throw line.
Graham 11-9 overall and 5-3 in the Mountain Empire District, plays tonight at MED foe Narrows.
