Seeking to stay atop their division in the Appalachian League, the Elizabethton Twins put together 16 hits Monday night at Bowen Field and took a 9-6 win from the Bluefield Orioles, who had 13 hits on their home field.
Daniel Ortiz hit a pair of home runs for the visitors, a solo shot in the second and a blast in the fourth with two men on, helping Elizabethton to a 5-1 lead.
Bluefield attempted a comeback in the seventh inning, scoring the game’s final four runs. Brad Decater and Luis Ramirez began the frame with back-to-back doubles, tallying one run. Dudley Leonora, Branden Webb and Corey Thomas each had RBI singles later in the frame.
The Orioles’ first run tied the game in the bottom of the first after Jeremy Shelby led off with a triple and came home on a wild pitch. The Birds picked up another run in the fifth when Ramirez doubled and reached home on a single by Leonora.
Bluefield starter Cameron Roth gave up five earned runs in four innings of work, including Ortiz’ homers. Roth’s replacement, Andrew Huebner, allowed three runs and five hits in 1 2/3 innings.
Sam Taveras finished the pitching duties for Bluefield, striking out five in two innings while limiting Elizabethton to one hit and no walks.
Jean Mijares, the Twins’ starter, struck out nine Orioles and surrendered two runs, both earned, and five hits. Jose Gonzalez pitched the ninth and earned his sixth save of the season.
Ramirez was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles. Decater and Austin Goolsby were also 2-for-4, and each had a double. Thomas drove in his 26th run of the season.
Ortiz, Oswaldo Arcia and Brian Burke were 3-for-5 for the Twins.
The Birds’ final game of the year with Elizabethton starts at 7 p.m. tonight at Bowen Field, with Bluefield State College scheduled to give T-shirts away to the first 250 fans.
The Orioles have been mathematically eliminated from playoff contention.
