Will Cole to attend Concord

BLUEFIELD — After a season at Virginia Tech, Will Cole has decided to transfer to Concord University and play for coach Mike Kellar and a program that enjoyed their most successful season in years.

“I just really liked the opportunity that Concord has given me to play football there,” Cole said. “I think it’s a blessing with the things that I would like to accomplish there. I felt like it was a good opportunity to transfer to Concord.”

For Cole, Concord was a match made in heaven.

“I liked that it was still close to home and the offense they run is very similar to the one I ran in high school,” Cole said. “I have a good relationship with coach Kellar and I just really liked the way that football program’s headed right now.”

Last season, the Mountain Lions went 6-5, just above the .500 mark but light years ahead of the combined 1-21 they were the previous two seasons. Cole is anxious to be a part of it.

“I’m really excited about it,” Cole said. “I can’t really speak for the team last year, but I really think they’re O.K. with what they did. But I think next year we’re expecting more and we’re expecting to win a couple of those games that we lost last year.”

At Virginia Tech, Cole was a scout team quarterback that had to wait and hope for his chance. At Concord, the 2008 Kennedy Award winner as the best high school player in West Virginia will get his chance much sooner.

“That’s all I wanted, just the opportunity and the chance to compete for the starting job,” Cole said.

Cole is armed with knowledge that will make him a strong candidate for that position — knowledge he gained in Blacksburg.

“I feel like I’ve learned a lot about the game of football while I was at Virginia Tech,” Cole said. “And it will translate over to Concord.”
