RICHLANDS, Va. —
No player is more dedicated to her game or her team than Brittany Allen and that dedication is beginning to pay off for the Richlands High School junior.
Allen is the Pocahontas Coal Association-Bluefield Daily Telegraph Player of the Week after a 28-point effort in last week’s Richlands win over Marion.
Her season already included a 33-point night in a win over Graham and an MVP award in a December tournament at Virginia High.
The Lady Blues guard doesn’t just play the game in months with the letter ‘r’ in them. She plays year round and those efforts have already earned Allen a chance to play NCAA Division I basketball in two years.
She recently made a verbal commitment to Winthrop (S.C.) of the Big South Conference.
“I play basketball 24/7,” said Allen, who has played on AAU travel teams since the eighth grade. “I can’t even take two days off. I love it. And I’m looking forward to playing (at Winthrop).”
Her game has always impressed Richlands coach Dennis Palmer.
“Brittany is a dynamic player,” Palmer said. “She can create shots on her own, she handles the ball well and she’s got quick feet.
“She shoots the ball well, or she can drive by people. All facets of her game are solid.”
Allen is as dedicated to her team, which reached the state semifinals last year and the quarterfinals her freshmen year, as she is to her own game.
She is not particularly worried about the Lady Blues recent two-game losing streak after an 8-0 start to the season.
“We’re definitely in a funk right now, but it’s nothing we haven’t been in before,” Allen explained. “I have faith in my team, I love them and we’re going to get through this, and it will make us stronger at the end.
“We’ve played together since elementary school. We know where each other are on the floor. We’re just not hitting our shots right now.”
