DRAPER, Va. —
It was a tough day for the Graham G-Men.
Graham picked the worst time to play what golf coach Matt Dixon said may have been their worst outing of the season, missing out on a second straight trip to the Group A state golf tournament.
Graham placed sixth in the Region C tournament on Wednesday at Draper Valley Golf Club, and also had no individuals that qualified for state play.
Zach Toohey led Graham with an 81, while Ben Ramsey added an 83. Bradley Hicks (85) and William McGuire (92) also contributed for the G-Men.
“We didn’t play very good,” Dixon said.
Korey Watts fired a tourney winning 69 to lead James River (316) to the Region C team title. The Knights will be joined next week at Lonesome Pine Country Club in Big Stone Gap for the Group A state tournament by Giles, which finished with a 322.
Gunar Frazier paced the Spartans with a 73.
The rest of the field included Galax (326), Glenvar (330), Holston (334), Graham (341), Northwood (342) and Parry McCluer (358).
Among the six individuals that always qualified for state play was John Bryant of Galax (72), Austin Fox of Glenvar (75), Northwood’s Austin Roberts (77) and Floyd County female golfer Amanda Hollandsworth, who finished second to Watts with a 70.
Graham, which placed third in the Group A state tourney last season, lost six seniors to graduation, but were able to win the Mountain Empire District regular season and tournament titles, breaking a 12-year run of dominance in the league by Galax.
The entire Graham team will return next season.
“They got some valuable experience, but the kids were really disappointed on the way home,” Dixon said. “They didn’t play the best they could have played, it was the probably the worst day team-wise all year, but you win as a team and lose as a team.
“Team-wise it was not a good day, but they did better than I expected them to do from the start of the year. They did all right.”
