HAYSI, Va. —
Haysi looks to stay perfect in Black Diamond District play two weeks ahead of its annual showdown with Honaker, while Honaker takes on a powerful non-district opponent for the second time in three games to highlight week nine of the 2012 regular season for BDD clubs.
Haysi (5-2, 2-0) hosts Hurley (4-3, 0-2) tonight at Sandlick Elementary School in the only district game this weekend.
The rest of the BDD faces non-district opposition, including Honaker.
The Tigers (6-1, 2-0) host undefeated John Battle (8-0) on Saturday.
Elsewhere tonight Twin Valley (1-6) hosts Rye Cove (1-6) while Grundy (3-4) pays a visit to defending Group A, Division 1 state champ Clintwood (6-1).
The Haysi Tigers put their four-game winning streak on the line tonight against a Hurley club that saw its four-game win streak end at the hands of Honaker last week.
Haysi has averaged just over 42 points in its last four games and the Tigers ability to both run and throw the ball with success has Hurley coach Greg Tester concerned.
The Rebels had trouble with Ty Hall and the Honaker passing game last week and now faces Zach Owens and a high-powered Haysi passing attack this week.
“We’ve got to do a better defending the pass,” Tester said.
“Haysi is going to spread us out and throw the ball.
“They will run a couple of dives to keep you honest but they’ll throw the ball downfield. We got to get pressure on Owens and not give him all day to set back there and throw.”
Saturday’s game at Honaker will kick off at 2 p.m.
The lights at Emats Stadium were knocked out during a recent storm and reportedly will have to be replaced.
