BLUEFIELD, Va. —
The mood swung from somber to joyous for fans of Graham High School on Monday night at the final home volleyball match of the season for the G-Girls.
Graham defeated their neighbor from across the border, Bluefield, by scores of 25-10, 25-8 and 25-17.
The match was designated as a “Play for the Cure” event, which spotlighted cancer awareness. A moment of silence was observed, said Graham coach Jaime Bowman, “for everyone to reflect on any family member or friend that they’ve lost, or who are still fighting the battle, and those who have survived.”
The Graham players got together on Saturday and dyed pink shirts that they wore during the game, Bowman said. Many shirts carried cancer-awareness slogans, and all of them met scholastic competition requirements by having a number on their backs.
It was also senior night. Ashley Moretto, Heather Sharp, Whitney Brown-ing and Kali Furry came onto the court for the final time in the regular season with their families. The seniors received flowers from Bowman and assistant principal Beth Morgan, and a gift from their teammates.
Bowman said all four started and finished the match. Bowman said, “They played very well. They had fun, a lot of fun. A lot of smiles tonight.”
All the G-Girls got to play, Bowman said, and the statistics bore that out. Rebecca Day had four aces, one block, one dig, two assists and five kills. Browning had two aces, five assists and three kills. Furry had two digs; Sharp had two aces and two kills.
Taylor Webb had three aces and two kills. Emily Lewis contributed two kills. Emileigh Gallinger had four kills. Moretto had two aces and two kills. Casey Spencer had three kills. Erica Jollay had three aces with her jump serve.
The G-Girls (5-14) play today at Grayson County in their last regular-season match. The district playoffs start for Graham a week from Thursday. The semifinals and finals are on Oct. 27.
