JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. —
For the second night in a row, the Princeton Rays fell victim to a last-inning rally by the Johnson City Cardinals on Saturday. The Cards scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth to beat the Rays 9-8.
The Cards (31-24) took a 5-0 lead into the fifth inning, but Princeton (29-29) scored eight unanswered runs, starting with a Reid Redman RBI double.
Oscar Hernandez hit a two-run home run in the sixth, and Brandon Martin hit his ninth homer to lead off Princeton’s five-run seventh inning.
P-Rays reliever Nick Sawyer got through the eighth inning and struck out the first two Cards he faced in the ninth. He then walked Ricardo Lizcano, who scored on a fielding error by Martin.
Sawyer gave up a double, a triple and a single, each of which scored one run to account for the final tally. Sawyer took the loss and Johnson City reliever Roberto Canache earned the win.
For the visitors, Omar Narvaez and John Alexander both went 3 for 5 at the plate. Lizcano was 3 for 3 for the Cards.
Princeton lost to the Cardinals 10-9 on Friday, giving up six runs in the ninth.
The two teams meet for the final time in 2012 today at 6 p.m. Princeton hosts Danville Monday through Wednesday.
