Prep roundup: Bland County, Graham drop Mountain Empire District affairs

BLAND, Va. — Devonte McKinney canned 22 points and Austin Peck canned 16 to lead Galax to a 69-47 Mountain Empire District win over Bland County on Tuesday night.

Asher Diller led Bland County with 21 points, while Chase Hankins canned 13.

Galax, the defending Division 1 state champion, and currently the second ranked Group A team in Virginia, also received 13 points from Lawrence Parsons.

Bland County travels on Friday to Fort Chiswell.

BLUEFIELD, Va. — Corey Gravely scored 20 points to lead four Pioneers in double figures in a Mountain Empire win over the G-Men.

Graham, which trailed 37-12 at the break, was led by Tony Hood with 13 points and 11 by Lamont Edwards.

Nathaniel Worrell added 14 points for the Pioneers (11-4, 3-1), while Brett Mabry had 11 and Cory Mabry contributed 10.

Graham will attempt to regroup on Friday at Grayson County.

Ben Brown and Eric Harris added 11 for Richlands (3-8).

Daniel Hobbs led Twin Valley eight points.

Richlands hosts Marion on Friday and welcomes Honaker on Saturday.

HURLEY, Va. — Tyler Cooper scored 21 points and Dustin Waynick added 13, leading the Rebels to a non-district win over the visitors from Kentucky.

Zach Avina paced Phelps with nine points.

Hurley, ranked ninth in the latest Group A prep poll, also received 10 points from Cooper’s brother, Austin.

The Rebels travel Friday to Council.

Hurley also won the girls game 46-41. No other information was available.

PRINCETON — Elisha Kidd made a six-foot jumper as time expired to lead Greater Beckley Christian past the Cavaliers.

Ethan Lehman paced Beckley Christian with 19 points, while Kidd added 14.

Mercer Christian (4-9) was paced by Caleb Janning (23), James Beckner (16) and Josiah Janning (10).

The Cavaliers will host New Life Academy on Friday.

Gage Bowles added eight points for Ballard Christian, which will host Oak Hill Academy (Red) on Friday. Both Deskins canned a trio of 3s apiece.

Champions Christian was paced by Issac Ratliff with 15 points.

SUMMERSVILLE — Candace Brown scored 46 points and the Bobcats rebounded from their first loss since 2008 with a win over the Grizzlies.

Summers County (10-1) saw its 105-game win streak snapped with a loss on Saturday at Scott, but the now-No. 2 Bobcats were able to get the win, with Brown finishing with a triple-double, adding 10 rebounds and 10 steals.

Shealyn Shaffer led the Grizzlies with 33 points, while McKenzie Martin added 10.

Summers County will host Princeton on Friday night.
