College roundup: Big Blues falls 13-5 on diamond at WSSU

HIGH POINT, N.C. — Bluefield State fell behind early and they weren’t able to recover as they fell13-5 to Winston-Salem State University at Ed Price Field Tuesday night.

The Rams (4-7) jumped out early on the Big Blues (2-3) scoring in the second, third, fourth and sixth innings to grab a 9-0 lead.

Rams starting pitcher Adam Satanoff held the Big Blues bats in check in his five innings on the mound, holding Bluefield State to only two hits while striking out three to earn the win.

Brad Weisgerber earned the loss for the Big Blues, giving up eight runs on nine hits and striking out one. Jon Neuberger had two RBIs for Bluefield State.

The Big Blues return to the diamond Friday morning when they return to Greer, S.C. to take on Mansfield University (Pa.) in an 11 a.m. game.

Kruk wins WVIAC award

Bluefield State’s Piotr Kruk is the WVIAC men’s tennis Player of the Week, as announced by the league office. A sophomore from Zarow, Poland, Kruk helped the Big Blues register a 5-4 non-conference victory over the University of Charleston. Kruk won his No. 3 singles match 6-3, 6-2 and teamed up with Guatam Sreeram to earn an 8-6 doubles victory.

Bluefield State wins two straight, improves to 2-2

Led by West Virginia Conference Pitcher of the Week Robert Haggerty, Bluefield State won a pair of games last weekend to improve to 2-2 on the season.

Bluefield State defeated Morehouse 9-2 — after losing the opener of the twinbill 7-5 — and also slugged past Elizabeth City State 20-15.

Haggerty worked six innings in the win over Morehouse, striking out seven and allowing just one earned run.

Travis Thompson added two hits and joined Brady Guimond with three runs batted in apiece.  

Princeton product Sean Williams led the Blues against Elizabeth City State with three hits and four runs batted in. Rainey Rainey homered, drove in three runs and scored three times.

Larry Lowry had six RBIs, while Chris Draeger scored four runs. Chris Rabe earned the win for the Blues.

The Big Blues traveled to Winston-Salem State on Tuesday, and will visit to Greer, S.C. to face Mansfield (Pa.) on Friday, and Virginia State on Saturday.

Bluefield State is slated to open its home slate next Tuesday against WVIAC foe Alderson-Broaddus.

•The Lady Blues’ softball team will open its season on Saturday at Montreat. They were slated to play at Fayetteville State last week, but those games were postponed by snow.

•Bluefield College played a trio of games at Toccoa Falls in Georgia, winning the opener 7-3 last Friday, but dropping the last two decisions 8-4 and 10-7.

Bluefield (3-3) is slated to open its home slate — weather permitting — with Washington Adventist on Monday, and a twinbill on Tuesday.

•The Lady Rams’ softball team is slated to open the season by hosting West Virginia Tech on Friday for a doubleheader at Graham Recreation Park. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.

•Concord will make its ‘home’ baseball debut on Saturday against Notre Dame College (Ohio) at Epling Stadium in Beckley. The Mountain Lions will play a pair of doubleheaders, starting at noon on Saturday, and 11 a.m. on Sunday.

The Mountain Lions are seeking the season’s first win after starting 0-8, including losing 10-4 and 9-3 last Saturday at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian in North Carolina.

•After starting the season with two wins under new head coach Alisa Tasler, the Lady Lions have dropped to 2-4, including a doubleheader loss — by scores of 8-0 and 8-3 — last Friday at Lincoln Memorial.

Concord will visit Shaw in Raleigh, N.C. on Saturday.
