Two men were arrested Monday and charged with operating a methamphetamine lab in McDowell County.
The War Police Department responded to a residence at 59 Jr. Poca Hill early Monday morning. When the officers arrived on scene, they located a working meth lab. The officers then requested assistance from the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office. The sheriff’s office then made contact with the Southern Regional Drug and Violent Crimes Task Force. Two men were arrested at the residence, Sheriff Martin B. West said.
West said Timothy Stone, age unavailable, of War, was arrested and charged with one count of operating a meth lab, child neglect creating risk of injury, and felony conspiracy. A second man, Thomas Perkins, age unavailable, of War, was arrested and charged with one count of operating a meth lab and one count of felony conspiracy.
It was the second meth lab located in the county by the sheriff’s office and West in a span of two weeks.
“Meth-amphetamine is a very dangerous and volatile drug,” West said. “We want to pursue every lead hoping we can resolve the problem arising in this county. I made a promise to the people of McDowell County to work on drugs and I intend to keep it.”
Stone was arraigned Monday morning before Magistrate Steve Cox and was placed on a $75,000 cash only bond. Stone was then remanded to the county holding unit. Perkins also was arraigned by Cox and was placed on a $50,000 cash only bond. Perkins also was remanded to the county holding unit to await transfer to the regional jail system.
Stone was the occupant of the residence at Jr. Poca Hill, according to sheriff’s office Chief Deputy James Muncy. Perkins didn’t live at the residence.
Monday’s arrest marked the second meth lab found by authorities in the War area of McDowell County in the past week. The sheriff’s department, working in conjunction with the regional drug task force, located a meth lab last week in the Warriormine area near War. One person was arrested in connection with the earlier and unrelated investigation.

The trial of Earl Click, the man who was charged along with his sister, Rebecca Lynn Hatcher, with the July 17, 2012 murder of Dr. Thomas Hatcher, mayor of War, has been continued according to the McDowell County prosecuting attorney’s office. The trial had been scheduled to start on Monday.
