BLUEFIELD —
Hundreds of holiday shoppers rushed inside the J.C. Penney store at the Mercer Mall when it opened at 6 a.m., this morning — Black Friday. One shopper from Monroe County waited outside the store in the parking lot from 11 p.m., Thursday night until the store opened, while others had a more modest wait.
“Several of our competitors opened on Thursday night, but we decided to give our associates time to spend with their families on Thanksgiving Day,” Steve Warf, manager of the JCP store at the Mercer Mall said. “It looks like it worked out OK. We just opened and the store’s full of people.”
Several stores across the region opened at 8 p.m. Thanksgiving night, including Kmart, Sears and Walmart. At Sears at the Mercer Mall, a large line of customers stretched around the corner of the store’s automotive center as anxious shoppers waited for the doors to open.
At Wal-Mart in Bluefield, Va., lines began forming inside of the store at 6 p.m., and continued to grow in size as 8 p.m. approached. Customers waiting in line were allowed to purchase popular items like movies and video games 10 people at a time after 8 p.m.
