TAZEWELL, Va. —
A Virginia state trooper died Friday night after being struck by an SUV on Route 30 in Hanover County, Va., while he was directing traffic from the Virginia State Fair.
Trooper Andrew D. Fox, 27, a Tazewell, Va., native, was serving with the Pulaski County detachment and was on special assignment to the State Fair. The Associated Press reported that he was directing traffic at the intersection of Route 30 and Theme Park Way when he was struck. Fox was transported to Virginia Commonwealth University, where he later died.
“It’s just very sad,” Tazewell County Sheriff Brian Hieatt said. “He was a good, hard-working dedicated man. He is someone who all law enforcement officers know. We were all so proud of him when he made it to the state police. He was the kind of person who always wanted to do right in his community.”
Hieatt hired Fox as an auxiliary officer when he introduced the program in the town of Tazewell. “His dad, David Fox, was serving with the Tazewell Police Department then,” Hieatt said. “He’s serving with the Richlands Police Department now.
“Andrew was the kind of young man who wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps,” Hieatt said. “I admired that a great deal.”
Fox graduated from Tazewell High School, and earned his undergraduate degree from Virginia Tech in 2006.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by the Perry & St. Clair Funeral Home in Tazewell.
