PRINCETON – Personnel with the state Department of Highways were scheduled to check a U.S. Route 460 traffic light after a collision claimed two lives Thursday at the Mt. Horeb exit near Princeton.
The two vehicle crash occurred at 1:42 p.m., said Lt. Joe Parks of the Mercer County Sheriff’s Department. One vehicle, a green tone Buick, was traveling westbound when it stopped at the intersection to make a turn.
“The vehicle slowed and then stopped in the turn lane to make a left turn onto Mt. Horeb Road,” Parks said. “According to a statement from the driver behind her, she had the green arrow and was crossing 460 eastbound.”
At that time the Buick had “a near head on collision with a vehicle traveling eastbound,” he said.
It had not been determined Thursday whether the eastbound vehicle, a Dodge Neon, ran a red light. Witnesses were giving conflicting reports about which driver had the red light, Parks said. The state Department of Highways was checking the light.
The woman driving the Buick was transported to Princeton Community Hospital (PCH) by a member of her family and had “mild to moderate injuries,” Parks said. Her name was not being released at that time.
Two people in the Dodge Neon, one a 39-year-old man from Vansant, Va., died at the scene. The driver, a woman, later died at Princeton Community Hospital, Parks said. Their names were being withheld pending the notification of next of kin.
Two children and an older woman in the Neon’s rear seat had “mild to moderate injuries,” Parks said. One of the children was in a child car seat.
“It was put in properly and used properly,” Parks said.
The Princeton Rescue Squad also worked at the crash scene.
