Demolition work underway on coal tipple in Vansant

VANSANT, Va. — Demolition work got underway this week on one of the iconic coal mining structures of Buchanan County, Va., — the Virginia-Pocahontas No. 3 mine tipple in Vansant.

The Virginia-Pocahontas mines were Island Creek properties. VP-3 opened in early 1970, according to Consol spokesperson Cathy St. Clair.

Island Creek operated the VP mines until the early 1990s when Consol acquired those properties. The VP-3 mine is located on U.S. Route 460 near the intersection with State Route 83.

According to St. Clair, the contractor on the tipple removal project — D.H. Griffin — is using a metal shearer on a 103-foot boom truck to cut the metal in the structure.

Work on the demolition project was underway prior to this week. St. Clair said that the project is expected to be finished in May.
