GRUNDY, Va. —
Two deputies remain in serious condition following the Sunday afternoon shootout in Vansant that left two more Buchanan County officers dead.
Buchanan County Sheriff's Deputies William Ezra Stiltner, 46, of Maxie and Cameron Neil Justice, 41, of Hurley were both shot and killed when responding to a call for back up after reports came in that two other sheriff's deputies had been shot while responding to a possible larceny in progress call near Grundy Wrecker Service, LLC and Roger's Convenience Market.
The shooter was identified as Randy Gilbert Newberry, 52, of Vansant, Sgt. Steve E. Lowe, a public information officer with the Virginia State Police, said. Newberry was shot and killed after being tracked through the woods to a residence around two miles down Deskins Road from where the incident took place.
The two deputies who responded to the initial call from the owner of Grundy Wrecker remain in critical condition at two hospitals in Tennessee.
Buchanan County Sheriff Ray Foster said Deputy Eric Dwayne Rasnake, 32, of Jewell Ridge remains in ICU at the Bristol Regional Medical Center. Rasnake is on a respirator while Deputy Shane Earl Charles, 25, of Maxie is at the Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Tenn. Rasnake and Charles had responded to the original call and were shot while investigating the property where the larceny was said to be taking place.
Foster thanked all of the state police and deputies from the Tazewell, Wise, and Scott County sheriff's departments for their aid as well as the local fire department and EMS workers for their help.
A prayer vigil will be held at 7 p.m. tonight at the courthouse in Grundy with several area churches open for grief counseling.
