Drug charges leveled against man in city jail

BLUEFIELD — A man facing attempted murder charges in Huntington is now facing drug charges in Bluefield after he was found with drugs in the city jail.

Sgt. G.W. Lightfoot, of the Bluefield Police Department, said Antonio Dewayne Ward, 31, has been charged with bringing paraphernalia into a prison or jail after drugs were discovered on his person while he was incarcerated at the city’s jail facility.

“We actually found a mix of heroin and cigarette tobacco on him,” Lightfoot said. “He had it stuffed inside himself. It’s actually a common thing that happens.”

Ward was taken into custody Sunday evening by Bluefield officers on warrants out of Cabell County including attempted murder, first-degree robbery, and first-degree kidnapping related to a March 2 incident in the east-end section of Huntington. Lightfoot said Ward will have to face the charges brought against him in Cabell County before he will face the drug charges in Bluefield.

Also taken into custody Sunday evening was Joseph Scott Reeves, 28. Reeves is facing kidnapping, malicious wounding and first-degree armed robbery charges in Cabell County.

Ward and Reeves were both arrested by Sgt. M.D. McPherson with the Bluefield Police Department during a traffic stop. McPherson had recognized the vehicle and license plate the two men were in as being wanted out of Huntington. Both men were held at the Bluefield City Jail until they could be transported to the regional jail.

Ward and Reeves are both charged in an incident Lt. John Williams of the Huntington Police Department previously described to the Daily Telegraph as “a drug deal gone wrong.” According to Williams, Ward shot an unidentified victim several times, but the victim has since been released from the hospital.

Williams said both Ward and Reeves have Bluefield-area address. Both men are presently in custody at the Southern Regional Jail in Beaver.
