RICHLANDS, Va. —
A crowd of more than 150 people came out to the V&V Restaurant parking lot for a noon meet and greet with George Allen, Virginia Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate. Allen’s Richlands stop marked the third during his coalfield-region tour with earlier visits to Clintwood, Va., and Grundy, Va.
“Coal means jobs,” Allen said in Richlands, and added that a Dickenson County official said: “Southwest Virginia lives or dies on the outcome of this election.” Allen talked about the so-called “War on Coal,” and said: “In Virginia, we’re in the eye of this storm.”
State Delegate James W. “Will” Morefield, R-Tazewell, and U.S. Rep. Morgan Griffith, R-Va., each addressed the audience. Morgan questioned how anyone could live in this part of the country, “and not be fighting the Obama administration’s war on coal,” he said.
