AFTERNOON UPDATE — Sentencing for former Sheriff continued two more days


BLUEFIELD — The federal court has again continued the sentencing hearing for former Mercer County Sheriff Danny Wills, but this time, only for two days.

In an order entered earlier this week, U.S. District Judge Irene Berger of the Southern District of West Virginia continued Wills’ sentencing to Thursday, Dec. 17, at 2 p.m., in U.S. District Court in Beckley. The hearing was previously scheduled for Dec. 15.

Wills, 63, of Bluefield, faces a maximum four-year prison sentence and a fine of as much as $250,000. He pleaded guilty on Aug. 27, to one count of fraudulently obtaining a quantity of the prescription pain killer hydrocodone. Wills is a medical doctor who operated a free clinic out of the sheriff’s office while in office.
