BLUEFIELD — Holiday shoppers out bright and early Friday morning will have to contend with a blast of colder air and possible snow showers.
A dusting of snow is possible by Friday morning for the region, Ken Kostura, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, Va., said.
“We are looking at rain on Thanksgiving Day,” Kostura said. “There will be showers especially during the afternoon hour. Those showers will continue into the evening hours. What will happen after midnight is a mix of rain and snow. The temperature is going to make all the difference as far as the accumulation. The ground is still kind of warm.”
However, if the temperatures drops quickly enough, and if a good blast of snow showers come through during the overnight hours, an inch or two of accumulation could even be possible, Kostara said.
“A light coating would be possible,” he said. “So it’s worth pointing out to be prepared for the potential of flurries and snow showers when people are out shopping (Friday morning). But your chances of snow are better as you go up north toward the Greenbrier Valley. That is where you are more likely to have your higher accumulations.”
Kostura said the region seems to be settling into a more seasonable, and colder, weather pattern.
The El Nino weather phenomenon is expected to impact the region’s winter weather. It is expected to bring cooler than normal temperatures to the region. However, drier than average conditions are expected in the region, including the Ohio and Tennessee River Valleys, as a result of the El Nino weather pattern.
