AFTERNOON UPDATE: Health officials report another rabid animal in Mercer County

BLUEWELL - A fifth animal has tested positive in Mercer County for the rabies virus, health officials said Friday.

A raccoon tested positive for rabies in the Buewell area Wednesday. No pets or humans are known at this time to be exposed to rabies as a result of the incident, Doris Irwin, a public health nurse with the Mercer County Health Department, said.

However, health officials are urging pet owners in the area to watch for symptoms of rabies in domestic animals such as dogs, cats, horses and cows, as well as wild animals such as raccoons, foxes, skunks and coyotes.
