AFTERNOON UPDATE — Tazewell board passes new property maintenance code

TAZEWELL, Va. — Tazewell County officials now have a tougher ordinance to address dilapidated structures.

The county’s Board of Supervisors adopted Tuesday night as part of the county’s existing building code selective provisions of the Virginia’s uniform property maintenance code. The new enforcement powers will allow officials to condemn structures that are considered a rodent harbor or insect infestation, or those structures that are occupied by rubbish and trash, as well as those structures that are deemed unsafe for human habitation.

Agricultural property, including barns, are exempt from the new ordinance, according to Northwestern District board member Seth White.
