AFTERNOON UPDATE: Officials celebrate 125th anniversary of coal mining in Mercer

BRAMWELL —Area officials are celebrating today the 125th anniversary of coal mining in Mercer County.

A ceremony is planned for this afternoon at 2 p.m. along Route 120 in the Cooper section of Bramwell to commemorate the 125th anniversary of coal mining in Mercer County, according to town officials in Bramwell.

The first coal mine on the West Virginia side of the historic Pocahontas coalfields was opened on Nov. 4, 1884.
