RICHLANDS, Va. — A woman was injured Friday morning following a fire at a motel in Richlands.
The Tazewell County 911 Communications Center received a call at 7:26 a.m. Friday morning of a fire at room No. 23 at the Hilltop Motel, which is located along the Gov. George C. Perry Highway in Richlands. At the time of the call, it was reported that a woman was trapped inside the room, Richlands Fire Chief William Puckett said.
Puckett said Nancy Phyllis Smith, 77, a resident of the hotel for approximately one year, was transported to Clinch Valley Medical Center with first and second degree burns. Puckett said the woman was also being treated for smoke inhalation.
When units from the town of Richlands, the Richlands Police Department and the Richlands Fire and Rescue arrived at the scene, they were able to determine that the woman had been removed from the room by members of the hotel management, according to a press release from the Richlands Police Department.
Puckett said the woman was in stable condition late Thursday at CVMC.
“She is still being treated,” Puckett said. “She could be released by Clinch Valley Medical Center. She is a lucky lady.”
Puckett said the hotel rents out rooms for an extended period of time.
Puckett said the fire is being considered accidental in nature. He said the incident is being investigated by Lt. D.G. Puckett.
Puckett said smoke and fire damage to the room was estimated at approximately $2,000.
