Ballots take shape for 2010 Mercer, McDowell primary

WELCH — Lists of McDowell County and Mercer County candidates that have filed to run for public office in the May 2010 primary was released Monday by the county clerks’ offices, but more filings may arrive by mail.

In West Virginia, candidates had until Jan. 30 to file for the election. Their forms had to be postmarked before midnight that day.

In McDowell County, a single seat on the county commission is up for election this year. So far, two candidates have filed. They are Harold McBride, a Democrat from the Browns Creek District, and Cecil Patterson, a Democrat from the Big Creek District.

In the county clerk race, incumbent Democrat Don L. Hicks has filed for re-election. Paitsel Lockhart had also filed for county clerk.

In the circuit clerk race, Democrat Francine Spencer has filed for election. Spencer is the current circuit clerk. She was appointed to the post last December to fill the unexpired term of former clerk Michael Brooks.

Three seats are up for election on the McDowell County Board of Education. As of Friday, three candidates had filed. They are incumbents Lynda “Pip” Evans, Mike Mitchem and Mark Shelton.

Randall Patton has filed for conservation district supervisor.

Nine candidates have filed to date for eight seats on the Democratic Executive Committee. The candidates include incumbents Kathleen Dudley, William “Bill” Chapman and Vanessa White along with Richard VanDyke, Noah Ervin Horn, Jessica “Mama Jes” Harmon, Thomas “Jeff” Lawson, Randall Patton, Manuel Collins, Harold Smith, Sheri Bales Addair, Trenna Keaton, Lionel Beasley Jr., Frances Hale, Earl Crigger, Peggy Blevins and Lawrence Crigger.

Heidi Hairston had filed for Republican Executive Committee in Browns Creek.

The Mercer County Clerk’s office released a list Monday of candidates who had filed for their candidacies for local office.

In the Circuit Judge, 9th District race, Omar Aboulhosn of Princeton and Timothy D. Boggess had filed to run.

In the circuit clerk’s race, current Circuit Clerk Julie Grubb Ball of Princeton was running unopposed.

Two candidates were running for a seat on the Mercer County Commission. They included Mike Vinciguerra Jr. of Bluefield and A. Gene Buckner of Route 5, Bluefield.

Verlin Moye of Princeton was running unopposed for county clerk.

In the race for Mercer County Sheriff, Democratic candidates included current Sheriff D.B. “Don” Meadows, Charles “Butch” Blizzard of Bluefield, Harold L. Buckner of Princeton, Edwin R. Vanover of Bluefield and Kevin Weiss of Oakvale. Republican candidiate Tony White of Athens had also filed.

In the Mercer County Magistrate race, candidates included Jim Dent of Princeton, Jacob “Jake” Hodges of Princeton and Susan Honaker of Bluefield.

Candidates for the Democratic Mercer County Executive Committee in District 1 included Mike Vinciguerra Jr. Republican Executive Committee candidates in the same district included Marty Gearheart of Bluefield, John W. Hudson of Bluefield and Ann Sampson of Bluefield.

In District II, the Democratic executive committee candidates were Penny Czarnik, Ryan J. Flanigan, Paige Flanigan and William S. Winfrey II, all of Princeton. In the same district, the Republican executive committee candidates were Paula Brooks, Joe Wellington, Richard G. Groan, Marshall G. Mann and Katherine Wallace, all of Princeton.

In District III, the Democratic executive committee candidates were Nancy H. Bailey, Ronald L. “Ron” Bailey, John Steven Boyd Jr., Bill Morefield and Doris Morefield, all of Princeton. The Republican executive committee candidates in the same district were Paul M. Canterbury and Yuvonne F. Dickerson, both of Princeton, and James T. “Jim” Lilly Jr and Pamela Byrd McPeak, both of Athens.

The candidates for Mercer County Board of Education in District I included Randolph Phillips of Bluefield and Robert Shanklin of Route 4, Bluefield. District II board candidates included Edward “Ted” Gillespie, J.B. Hurt and Gregory S. Prudich, all of Princeton. District III board candidates included Gilbert E. “Gene” Bailey of Camp Creek, Pamela Byrd McPeak of Athens and Lyle Cottle of Spanishburg.

Conservation District Supervisor candidates included Richard Lee Dillon Sr. of Bluefield, Curtis Murphy of Rock and Joseph “Joey” Wills of Princeton.
