CHARLESTON —
West Virginia Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin will order an emergency stand-down for safety at the state’s coal mines after the death of a fourth miner this year.
An announcement is set for 1 p.m.
It’s unclear when the stand-down will begin or how long it will last.
Forty-four-year-old John Myles of Hilltop was struck by a scoop Tuesday night and died of his injuries. The death at Pocahontas Coal Co.’s Affinity mine near Sophia is its second this month.
Federal records show that mine has been cited for safety violations 65 times since January.
The company says it’s very concerned, but the two deaths appear unrelated. State and federal investigations are under way.
