PEARISBURG, Va. —
Students in Giles County returned to the classroom Thursday, a day after officials canceled classes in light of a perceived online threat against the school system.
Amanda Tickle, a spokesperson with the Giles County Superintendent’s Office, said the return to school was uneventful.
“We are officially all back today, and we had no issues,” she said. “All of our schools have returned to class. We are glad to be back.”
School officials canceled classes Wednesday due to concerns about a perceived reference to schools in Narrows was posted on a web site dedicated to finding coincidences in recent shooting events.
The Revelation Now website apparently connected Narrows, Va., the recent Sandy Hook Elementary shooting in Newtown, Conn. and Aurora, Colo. theater shooting to last summer’s “The Dark Night Rises.” According to Internet users, Narrows and Sandy Hook were both areas mentioned when Batman — portrayed in the film by Christian Bale — searched a fictional online map of Gotham City. The web site also contains various conspiracy theory postings and information about UFO sightings.
County schools and the local sheriff’s office received calls from concerned parents following the online posting, prompting the decision to close classes for one more day before students returned from their holiday break.
Tickle said school officials were still working to determine if the canceled school day would be counted as a snow day on the school’s calendar.
