BLUEFIELD —
A wintry mix of rain, sleet and snow will welcome the region into 2013.
William Perry, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, Va., said a wintry mix of rain, sleet, snow and freezing rain is expected today across Mercer, McDowell, Monroe, Tazewell, Bland, Buchanan, and Giles counties.
“We are expecting to see precipitation move in the area with a mixture of rain and sleet with a little snow mixed in then transitioning into a rain and sleet mix during the day today,” Perry said. “This continues through this evening with some freezing rain at times but mainly rain and sleet. This evening, we will see snow showers that will end over night or Wednesday.”
Perry said the higher elevations will experience the coldest temperatures as the weather system moves through the area.
“The Flat Top area and East River Mountain will see the coldest temperatures in the area,” he said. “However, other areas might not even hit the freezing mark. The Bluefield area might not hit below 34 or 33 degrees.”
At this point, Perry said the weather service is not anticipating a large accumulation of snow.
“We are only looking at not even an inch of snow,” he said. “The snow and sleet will probably be less than an inch throughout the region. The freezing rain will be just a trace, so this is mainly a rain and sleet event.”
The winter weather should be over by late Wednesday, Perry said.
“Wednesday and Thursday are looking dry with high pressure building in the area Wednesday and into Thursday,” he said. “The next system on our horizon isn’t coming toward the Bluefield area.”
Perry said those traveling today and tomorrow are asked to be cautious due to potential snow and ice.
“If you are traveling Tuesday morning, I would be cautious,” he said. “Right now, it is very marginal snow we are expecting. We aren’t expecting too much freezing rain, but people should be cautious of any ice freezing on bridges while they are out.
